Visiting International Professionals Program

The Hawaiʻi Visiting International Professionals (VIP) Program provides foreign legal and business professionals the opportunity to study American and international law through a program of courses given on a non-credit, non-degree basis. The VIP program is ideal for mid-career professionals who wish to pursue specialized law study but are not seeking a degree. We also welcome LLM graduates who wish to gain additional training in American law or are preparing to take a U.S. bar exam by focusing on bar-related courses.

The full VIP program begins each year in August and ends in May, but applicants who are unable to spend the full academic year at the Law School may apply to participate in the VIP program for one semester only. VIP participants may enroll in up to 17 credit hours per semester of classes as auditors. Although VIP participants are free to take most Law School courses, enrolment is subject to space availability and approval by the course instructor.

Upon completion of the program, participants will earn an auditor’s transcript and a VIP certificate from the Law School. Audited courses may not be used toward fulfilling any degree requirements of other programs at the University of Hawaiʻi.

Members of the VIP program are welcome to take part in all Law School activities and are fully integrated into our Law School community. VIP participants are also included in orientation and other special events offered to our LLM students and visiting scholars throughout the year.

Applications

An application to the VIP Program must contain the VIP Application form available here, a personal statement and CV, the $60 application fee, two letters of recommendation, financial support documentation and a copy of the passport bio-information page. The TOEFL, IELTS or equivalent English test is also required; the recommended minimum TOEFL score for VIP applicants is 500 (CBT 173, IBT 61).

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and admission granted on a space-available basis. Applicants are advised, however, that visa processing can take several months, so they should apply as early as possible.
