Biography

Professor Otani is a well-known and accomplished human rights attorney from Japan with her primary focus in the area of international rights of women and children in the family law setting. She is the vice-chair of the International Human Rights Committee of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, perhaps the most significant human rights position for a practicing lawyer in Japan, and she is currently at the center of all national activities pertaining to Japan’s pending ratification of the Hague Convention on the International Parental Child Abduction. Professor Otani will be on campus through November 23, 2011 to teach “The Law Concerning Women and Children in Japan and East Asia”. She will be giving an Asia Law Talk on November 15 (seating limited) and a lunch talk to judges and lawyers (WRSLS students welcome) at the Supreme Court Conference Room on November 23rd.
