35th Ete Bowl Special Issue
The Law School's award-winning flag football game, the Ete Bowl, celebrated its 35th year at the UH soccer field on Sunday.
Ete's Captain Kimi Ide-Foster '14 wrote: "This year's Ete Bowl brought together a wide range of players, from the founders of the Bowl itself to the current 1Ls at the William S. Richardson School of Law. What started with Ete legends Diane Ho '79 and Ricki Amano '79 as a competitive, spirited way to bond classmates way back in 1978 has grown into a community-building experience that celebrates female empowerment, hard work, and perseverance. This year's game ended in a hard-fought tie (1-1) and both teams should be proud of the effort they put into the game. The 35th Anniversary Celebration following the game was marked by genuine friendship and respect between the Bruzers and the Etes, and was a perfect example of the values that make the Richardson ohana so special."
The 35th Bowl roster included 60 potential players from among women law students and 30 from alumnae. Jill Nunokawa ‘88 who has been involved as a player and a coach with the Ete Bowl for 25 years said over the years the game has included a lot of women who never had the opportunity to play sports or who never benefited from Title IX. “Through this you see women trying new things and shattering all kinds of stereotypes and really pushing themselves to take risks they never even imagined," she said.
In April the game was honored with the President’s Award by Hawai‘i Women Lawyers in recognition of its unique role over three decades in connecting up-and-coming attorneys with generally older, more seasoned women lawyers already working in the community.
Avi Soifer, a longstanding supporter of the Ete Bowl, wrote: “Year after year the Ete Bowl underscores how strong Richardson women law students and lawyers are and how important sisterhood can be. The competition is intense, and so is the mutual support and employment assistance that is palpable after the game.”
