Monday, January 27, 2014 - 12:00pm

Event Location
William S. Richardson School of Law
2515 Dole Street
Honolulu, HI 96822-2350

Room 254

This talk is a Faculty Profesional Development Series talk, open only to Faculty, Faculty Specialists, and Library Faculty.

This presentation will analyze the depiction of a trial in the 1951 film Awaara, which was directed by Raj Kapoor and starred Kapoor and Nargis.  Awaara was a huge hit not only in India but throughout Asia during the 1950s; when it was shown in China soon after the beginning of the reform and opening policies in 1979, it left a deep impression on many viewers and inspired an interest in law and justice.  Why did Awaara resonate with Chinese audiences and what explains its special and continuing appeal in China?
