Notes

Increasing numbers of recently admitted lawyers are attempting to practice law on their own. To do so responsibly and successfully, they need to know more than law schools have traditionally taught. Specifically, they need to know how to conduct the business of law. In this three-credit course, each student will develop a business plan for establishing and operating her own law firm. Specific topics include space and equipment needs, employment practices, financial accounting systems (e.g., trust and operational accounts, budgets, tax compliance), marketing, client relations, conflict-of-interest identification, document creation and retention systems, calendaring and other tickler systems, fee structures and billing systems, building a support network and developing a back-up plan. Each student will meet three times with a volunteer “mentor” (i.e., a practicing attorney with personal experience starting and/or operating a law practice in the area of law that most interests the student) who will demonstrate and explain firm policies and business systems in place at the lawyer’s law firm.
