New Application Fee Waiver Instituted by William S. Richardson School of Law

In order to better recognize the many public service achievements of those who apply for admission, the William S. Richardson School of Law will be waiving its $75 application fee for applicants who have demonstrated a dedication to community service, social justice, and the public interest. 

According to Law School Dean Avi Soifer, the new fee waiver fits perfectly with the Law School's mission..

"The William S. Richardson School of Law is committed to developing highly qualified, ethical professionals through excellence in public service as well as in through our teaching and legal scholarship,” said Dean Soifer.  ”We want to continue to attract highly-qualified applicants who will be leaders in the practice of law and related careers that advance justice.”

Applicants who are interested in the fee waiver may qualify if they are members of one or more of the following groups:

  • U.S. military veterans and service members;
  • Peace Corps members and alumni;
  • AmeriCorps members and alumni;
  • City Year members and alumni;
  • Teach For America  members and alumni;
  • Truman Scholars;
  • Persons who have served or are currently serving under-served communities through another established public service organization or program;
  • Persons who have engaged or are currently engaged in activities and/or employment manifesting a strong commitment to social justice, the public interest, and service to legally and economically disadvantaged communities.

Qualified applicants must request this service recognition fee waiver from the William S. Richardson Law School Admissions Office before they transmit the electronic application through the Law School Admissions Council website at http://www.lsac.org.

To apply for a service recognition fee waiver, please email the following information to the Director of Admissions, Elisabeth Steele Hutchison, at esteele@hawaii.edu.

  • Full name as it appears on your law school application
  • LSAC (Law School Admissions Council) account number
  • Email address
  • Name of the service organization of which you are a past or present member
  • Dates of service
  • Supporting documentation (e.g., TFA certification letter, Truman award letter, verification of service letter, DD-214, or personal service record)

The Law School also waives its application fee for those applicants who are in financial need and who have been granted Law School Admissions Council (LSAC) fee waivers.

Application forms to attend the William S. Richardson School of Law will become available online on October 1, 2013. The final due date is February 1, 2014.
