Melissa Uhl

Hometown: Kihei, Maui

Degree: Santa Clara University, Double Major in Political Science (BS) and Environmental Science (BS), 2007.

Why did you choose UH Law? I want to practice in Hawaiʻi so going to school here was the obvious choice. I wanted to study and be close to the issues facing our state. I also wanted to be able to do work in the community while still in school.

What were you doing before you started Law School? I've tried a handful of things. While with The Natural Capital Project at Stanford University, I interviewed ecosystem service project leaders from various countries and complied a database of their experiences for future programing. Then, at the Environmental Working Group I worked on environmental health issues and lobbied on Capitol Hill. I've also worked for the Maui Writers Conference as an event coordinator and at the Hawaiʻi State Senate as a legislative aide on the Judiciary Committee.

Where are you headed after you graduate? Not sure! Hopefully somewhere good!

Describe UH Law using three words:
 Unique. Encouraging. Challenging.

What Law School organizations/activities are you involved in? I’m pursuing the Environmental Law Certificate and am Co-Director of the Environmental Law Society. I’m also on Law Review.

Where is your favorite place to study? During the semester I like to study at home because I have a desk that faces a huge window, which is relaxing. During finals, I study in the library.
