Why did you choose UH Law?
Strategically, I have always intended to live in Hawaiʻi, so going to school here was a great way to start building relationships for the future. I also knew going to law school would be a huge sacrifice, so I wanted to stay close to home where I felt comfortable and had a strong support network. Most importantly, having a balanced life was essential, and with the ocean so near, it was easy to take a break from the books from time to time and just relax.
What were you doing before you started Law School?
After graduating from college, I got into the real estate market with hopes of being my own boss and traveling the world. The financial crisis put somewhat of a hold on that plan, but it was a great opportunity for me to step back and focus on my educational goals of pursuing a JD/MBA degree. I resumed my responsibilities managing a local surf retail shop, did some traveling before and after the law school application process, and got ready for the first semester.
Where are you headed after you graduate?
My plan is to remain in Hawaiʻi, so I hope to have a rewarding and comfortable associate position with a local law firm after graduating.
Describe UH Law in three words.
Welcoming, Stimulating, Challenging
What surprised you most about the UH Law?
Although the environment did get a bit competitive around crunch time, most students were pretty easy going and willing to help. The upperclassmen were also really helpful in imparting wisdom and passing down outlines for class lectures and exams, which were for the most part disseminated. Rather than hoarding materials, everyone seemed pretty willing to share information and tips, and left it up to the individual to perform during test time.
Where can we find you when you’re not in class?
It is Hawaiʻi, home to some of the best waves in the world, so when I am not nose deep in books I am often hunting down some surf with friends.
How would you describe your classmates?
I have to preface this by saying that I did not think my classmates would be much fun, but there is a really diverse group of students here that also know how to enjoy themselves. We have great events at the law school just about every month, and even more events outside of law school with 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls alike. Although it has only been a year, I have already made many lifelong friends.
