Law Library

For Faculty & Staff

Reference and Research Assistance

The Library staff provides legal reference and research assistance to all students, faculty and staff. Librarians are available to direct students to various sources of information, instruct students on use of legal research tools, and to locate legal documents. Students and faculty members working on special projects are encouraged to consult with the librarians for research assistance. Librarians are available until 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Librarians are also at the Reference Desk, Monday through Friday from 1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Research and Subject Guides are compiled and written by the Library staff to assist library users in finding materials. They include guides to finding case decisions, researching legislative history in Hawai`i and finding the current codes of states & territories.

Faculty Liaisons

Permanent full-time faculty are assigned to one of two public services librarians. Your liaison librarian can assist you with planning research projects, working with your research assistants, presenting topical research sessions for your classes and the like. Your assignment will be forwarded to you at the beginning of the academic year.

Placing Past Exams on Reserve and on the Web

Faculty may send electronic copies of materials through their faculty support staff. The Course Reserve and Exam Processing form must be completed and submitted with the materials. Please indicate if you do not wish to put the exams on the Library web page. Unless specifically prohibited by the faculty member, all submitted exams are scanned and put on the Library’s web page, accessible only to students and faculty by password. Get the password from library staff (956-7583) or email uhlawref@hawaii.edu. Print copies of exams are also put on Reserve.

Direct all questions to Circulation staff (956-7583). All materials should be submitted to the Library a week before they are to be used by students or as soon as possible so that they can be processed on time.

Requests to delete or remove online or print exams should be sent to Circulation staff at lawcirc@hawaii.edu or call 956-7583.

Placing Class-Related Materials on Reserve

Course reserves and other items to be placed on Reserve must be submitted with the Course Reserve and Exam Processing form. All items should be sent to the Library a week before they are to be used by students so that they can be processed on time. Faculty may send their materials through their faculty support staff. Library staff will list the materials online under “Reserves” on the Voyager library catalog.

Routing Library Materials to Faculty

  1. Current Periodicals: Full-time faculty may request that current serials or periodicals be routed to their offices. They may send a note to, call or email Catherine (956-5575; thomasca@hawaii.edu). Current materials should be reviewed and returned to the Library within 14 days. If a longer loan period is required, inform Catherine.
  2. New Publications:  Some new publications are routed to interested faculty members. These items should be returned to the Library within 14 days so that they can be routed to other faculty members. If a longer loan period is required, inform the Library. If no other faculty member asks for the item, the loan period may be extended.
  3. Extended Loan Periods for Multi-volume Treatises, Serials and Books:  Full-time faculty members have specific titles on indefinite loan to them. Since these are Library materials, they should be filed and not discarded after use. When you receive updates or supplements, you may request filing assistance from the Library. The Library periodically updates loose-leaf titles for faculty as long as the faculty member or his/her support staff member has given permission to enter his/her office. If you no longer need these materials, please return them to the Library.

Returning Library Materials

Law Library materials may be renewed online or returned using the specially marked basket in the Faculty Lounge. You may also return books in the drop box outside the Library or at the Circulation Desk. Hamilton and Sinclair Library materials may be returned at the Law Library, except for Reserve and audiovisual items which must be returned to the owning library. Please return library materials when you no longer need them.

Proxy Borrowers

Faculty may authorize their student research assistants to charge out library materials in their names. A Proxy Borrower Registration Form must be signed by the faculty member and the student, and submitted to the Library.

Displaying Your Publications at the Library

The Library regularly displays faculty publications in its display cases. All faculty members are encouraged to send a copy of their publications to the Law Library. Usually an extra copy is submitted for display, as the Library’s copy is cataloged for in-library use only. If a personal copy is submitted, it will be returned to the faculty member after the display is over. The Library will display articles, books or items in any media published within the last two years. Older publications are periodically removed to make room for newer ones.

Reserving Library Rooms

Room 117 may be reserved for classes, seminars, training or other law school-related purposes. Reservations are based on a first-come, first-served basis. Call CTS at 956-4727 to reserve the room and the equipment for use in the room. A reservation sign-up sheet is posted on the room door.

Room 111 is used for group study. Use the sign-up sheet on the door or call Circulation at 956-7583, email lawcirc@hawaii.edu or use the online Law Library Room Request form. It also explains the procedures and policies for using the rooms.

Subscribing to CILP (Current Index to Legal Periodicals); Law Memo (Employment Law)

  1. CILP: The electronic version of CILP is sent by email to all interested faculty members. SmartCILP is a personalized email delivery of most recent selected topics, subject headings and journals. Alternatively, you may create a SmartCILP profile yourself by going to http://depts.washington.edu/scilp/scilp3.cgi To do this, you must get the authorization code from Swee. If you have problems setting up the profile, please contact Swee. A sample of a SmartCILP page may be seen at http://lib.law.washington.edu/cilp/sample.html
  2. Law Memo: Email delivery of Law Memo includes Employment Law Memo (3 per week); NLRB Law Memo (weekly), and Arbitration Law Memo (monthly). Contact Swee at berkey@hawaii.edu if you want to get on the email lists.
