Maoli Thursday: Auwē in Naue
The Future of Hawai‘i’s Burial Laws

Event Date: November 5, 2009

Thursday, November 5, 2009
12:45 ‐ 1:55pm
Moot Courtroom

During construction of a private home in Naue, Kauaʻi, thirty Native Hawaiian human skeletal remains were found. Over a year later, the house is nearly built over six known burials, but no burial treatment plan was ever put in place. The resulting Brescia v. Edens‐Huff, et al. litigation raises serious concerns over how Hawai‘i’s burial laws are interpreted and how Native Hawaiian burial sites are treated and protected. Join us for a lively discussion with the attorney for defendant/third‐party plaintiff in the Brescia case and an expert in archaeology and historic preservation.

Camille Kalama, Esq.

is a staff attorney for the Native Hawaiian Legal Corporation (“NHLC”),
and a 2005 graduate of the William S. Richardson School of Law. She joined NHLC in 2006 after clerking for one year at the Hawai‘i Supreme Court. Ms. Kalama views her work with NHLC to protect and preserve native rights and resources as her kuleana, or responsibility, as a Native Hawaiian. Her current caseload includes defending burial rights, kuleana access rights, and amending birth certificates.

Kēhaunani Abad, Ph.D.

received her academic training in Hawaiian archaeology and ethnohistory. Dr. Abad has worked with numerous Hawaiian grassroots and formal organizations on historic preservation matters, often advocating on their behalf in academic, legislative, or judicial settings. As a Hawaiian cultural practitioner involved in caring for Hawaiian burials, she has worked with Hui Mālama I Nā Kūpuna o Hawai‘i Nei, as well as the O‘ahu Island Burial Council (OIBC) as its representative for the Ewa district. She currently serves as Kamehameha Schools’ representative on the OIBC.
