Donating to the Law School

Our Law School is unique, in fact, in how much our students are empowered and active in the daily life of both the Law School and the community. What we do would be impossible without the generous, ongoing support of our alumni and friends.

Private gifts have a significant impact at the Law School and provide substantial support to the students, faculty, and programs at the Law School.

There are many ways to support us.

Outright Gifts

An outright gifts is a direct transfer of an asset to the Law School. Outright gifts may be made with cash, securities, stock, a life insurance policy, real estate and personal property. Gifts of this kind produce an even greater benefit to the donor because of tax advantages.

Life Income Gifts

Life Income gifts offer an opportunity to invest in the future of the Law School while continuing to receive income. Depending on the type of gift, donors retain the right for a designated beneficiary or beneficiaries, including the donor, to receive income from the donated assets. After the death of the income beneficiary or beneficiaries, or a set number of years, the gift becomes available to the Law School for the purpose designated by the donor.

Matching Gifts

Many corporations have Matching Gift programs where they will match gifts their employees make to qualified charities. Matching Gift policies vary from company to company, so please check with your Human Resources Office to see if your employer matches charitable gifts. Many companies will also match charitable gifts of their retirees and employee spouses.

Gifts in Honor or Memory

A gift in honor or memory to the Law School is a thoughtful and lasting way to honor a former law partner, friend, family or faculty member or to acknowledge a special event.

Estate & Gift Planning

With planned giving, donors can realize tangible tax benefits for themselves and their families as well as for the University of Hawaiʻi. Cash, real estate, stocks, bonds and other financial instruments are all avenues for a planned gift and its resulting tax savings. Donors are also able to fulfill their philanthropic goals by creating a legacy at the University of Hawaiʻi, aiding the University in its goal towards greater excellence. Please see Estate & Gift Planning.
